Journey Through Jazz: The Mighty Negro Spirituals
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

ABOUT THE CONCERT

Feel the power of gospel, jazz, and community come alive in The Mighty Negro Spirituals, a moving performance led by JLCO trumpeter Marcus Printup. Joined by members of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church under the direction of Prof. Vinroy D. Brown, Jr., Printup leads audiences through a soul-stirring mix of Negro Spirituals, hymns, and gospel songs that shaped the sound of American music.

Rooted in his own gospel upbringing in Conyers, Georgia, Printup brings deep personal connection and reverence to this exploration of songs born from the faith, resilience, and hope of enslaved Africans. Together, the ensemble will share the stories and spirit behind beloved classics such as “Wade in the Water,” “This Little Light of Mine,” and “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho,” inviting everyone to clap, sing, and move as the spirit leads.

Set against the breathtaking skyline views of the Appel Room, this concert is both a celebration and a reflection, offering an unforgettable evening that honors the spirituals continuing to inspire generations.

Part of the Lynne and Richard Pasculano Jazz Series, this is a pay-what-you-choose performance and not part of subscriptions.
