Abdullah Ibrahim: Life of a Legend
ABOUT THE CONCERT
This concert honors the 91st birthday of Cape Town-born pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim, celebrating a remarkable 75-year career that has profoundly shaped the global jazz landscape. Known as “Dollar Brand” during his early years, Ibrahim's career breakthrough came in 1963 when Duke Ellington, impressed by his trio's performance in Zurich, facilitated his first recording and set him on a path of international acclaim.
A 2019 NEA Jazz Master, Ibrahim's music seamlessly blends the elegance of Ellington with the mystique of Monk and the soul of his African roots. His compositions, including the iconic Mannenberg, became anthems of resistance during apartheid, symbolizing the resilience and spirit of the South African people.
The concert will feature Ibrahim in various settings: performing solo, leading his renowned trio, and presenting his acclaimed four-horn septet, Ekaya—meaning "home" in Zulu. Ekaya's music is a blend of African rhythms and jazz that creates a deeply personal and spiritually resonant musical experience. Special guests for this evening include 2024 NEA Jazz Master Terence Blanchard, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and bassist Cecil McBee, each bringing their unique artistry to this celebration of Ibrahim's enduring legacy.
