Come Sunday: The Sacred Works of Duke Ellington
ABOUT THE CONCERT
Set in the Appel Room, where sweeping views of Columbus Circle and Central Park frame the stage, this concert invites you to experience Duke Ellington’s sacred music like you have never heard it before! Grammy Award-winning pianist and music director Luther S. Allison leads a dynamic dectet as they explore Ellington’s most personal works with warmth and a fresh, modern edge.
Allison is joined by a standout vocal team featuring C. Anthony Bryant, Ekep Nkwelle, and the Sunhouse Singers with Joie Bianco, June Cavlan, and Kate Kortum. Kortum, fresh from major appearances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in Big Band Holidays and as a featured artist in the Unity Jazz Festival, recently won the 2025 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Their combined harmonies bring depth and heart to Ellington’s music, while tap dancer John Manzari adds rhythmic brilliance that gives the evening a joyful pulse.
Rooted in works like Black, Brown and Beige and Come Sunday, the night unfolds as a vibrant and welcoming celebration for every listener.
