Come Sunday: The Sacred Works of Duke Ellington

ABOUT THE CONCERT

Duke Ellington famously declared his sacred compositions to be “the most important thing I have ever done.” These works, including Black, Brown and Beige, Come Sunday, and In the Beginning God, transcend traditional jazz by blending sacred themes with orchestral textures, improvisation, and spiritual depth.

Grammy Award-winning pianist and music director Luther S. Allison, a multi-instrumentalist equally at home on piano and drums, leads this sacred jazz celebration with a fresh perspective. Known for his work with Etienne Charles, Jazzmeia Horn, and Samara Joy, Allison has performed across the U.S. and abroad and reimagines Ellington’s music here with a dynamic dectet.

He is joined by an extraordinary lineup of vocalists: Harlem-based C. Anthony Bryant, celebrated for his powerful and versatile voice; rising star Ekep Nkwelle, known for her lyrical and emotive delivery; and the Sun House Singers featuring Joie Bianco, June Cavlan and Kate Kortum, who bring warmth and rich harmony to the stage. At just 23, Kortum has already earned over 3.5 million streams for her debut album Good Woman and performed at venues such as the Newport Jazz Festival and Birdland.

Adding to the evening’s artistry is acclaimed tap dancer John Manzari, whose percussive brilliance brings another layer of expression to Ellington’s sacred music. Together, this ensemble explores the spiritual resonance of his most profound works, honoring his legacy while breathing new life into his vision.
