Journey Through Jazz: The Mighty Negro Spirituals
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

ABOUT THE CONCERT

The Journey Through Jazz series, now in its fifth year, continues with The Mighty Negro Spirituals, a musical exploration led by JLCO trumpeter Marcus Printup. Discover how Negro spirituals—songs born from the experiences of enslaved Africans—laid the foundation for jazz and gospel music. Through these spirituals, enslaved people expressed their faith, resilience, and longing for freedom, often embedding coded messages about escape and deliverance. Their call-and-response structures, pentatonic scales, and rhythmic patterns became integral to the development of jazz and gospel traditions.

Marcus Printup, who grew up immersed in the gospel music of his church in Conyers, Georgia, brings a personal connection to this rich musical heritage. His deep understanding and appreciation for these roots will guide the audience through a performance that honors the enduring legacy of spirituals and their transformative impact on American music.

Part of the Lynne and Richard Pasculano Jazz Series, this is a pay-what-you-choose performance and not part of subscriptions.

This program funded through the generosity of Mica and Ahmet Ertegun.

This program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
