Join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) in celebrating the centennial of Miles Davis (1926-1991), one of jazz's most transformative figures. These shows delve into Davis' groundbreaking big band collaborations with arranger Gil Evans, demonstrating why the trumpeter’s big band work was every bit as important as his small group output.
Davis and Evans redefined what jazz could be through landmark albums like Miles Ahead (1957), featuring a 19-piece orchestra and blending cool jazz with orchestral textures; Porgy and Bess (1958), reimagining George Gershwin's opera through a jazz lens; and Sketches of Spain (1960), drawing inspiration from Spanish folk music and classical compositions, particularly the works of Joaquín Rodrigo.
Through these compositions, Davis and Evans not only expanded the possibilities of jazz but also influenced generations of musicians across various genres. This centennial celebration offers an opportunity to experience the creativity and influence of one of jazz’s most transformative partnerships.
